The red wedding takes place at which location?
Question: The red wedding takes place at which location?
The Red Wedding is one of the most shocking and brutal events in the history of A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy series by George R. R. Martin that inspired the TV show Game of Thrones. But where exactly did this bloody massacre take place?
The Red Wedding occurred at the Twins, the castle of House Frey that spans both banks of the Green Fork river. The Twins consist of two identical towers connected by a bridge, and are the only crossing point for hundreds of miles. The Freys control the access to the bridge and charge a toll for anyone who wants to cross.
The Twins were the site of the wedding between Edmure Tully, the lord of Riverrun, and Roslin Frey, one of the many daughters of Lord Walder Frey. The wedding was arranged by Robb Stark, the King in the North, as a way to make amends for breaking his promise to marry a Frey girl himself. Robb had fallen in love with Jeyne Westerling, a noblewoman from the Westerlands, and married her in secret.
However, unbeknownst to Robb and his allies, Lord Walder Frey had already betrayed them and joined forces with Tywin Lannister, the Hand of the King and the most powerful lord in Westeros. Together, they planned a treacherous plot to end the War of the Five Kings and crush the northern rebellion.
The wedding itself was a lavish affair, with music, dancing, food and wine. But as soon as the bedding ceremony began, when the bride and groom are escorted to their chamber by their guests, the doors of the hall were locked and the musicians revealed themselves to be crossbowmen. They opened fire on the unsuspecting guests, killing many of them instantly.
Robb Stark was wounded by several bolts and watched helplessly as his pregnant wife Jeyne was stabbed to death by Lothar Frey. His mother Catelyn Stark tried to save him by holding a knife to the throat of Walder Frey's young wife, Joyeuse, but Walder did not care for her life. He mocked Catelyn and told her that Robb's bannermen were also being slaughtered outside.
Catelyn then slit Joyeuse's throat and let out a terrible scream before being killed herself by Raymund Frey. Robb's direwolf Grey Wind was also killed by crossbowmen after being trapped in a kennel. The only survivors of the massacre were Edmure Tully, who was taken prisoner, and a few others who managed to escape or hide.
The Red Wedding was a devastating blow to the northern cause and marked the end of Robb Stark's reign as King in the North. It also earned Lord Walder Frey and his house a reputation for treachery and dishonor that would haunt them for generations.
