The human eye has a region of highest visual acuity called the fovea, which corresponds to the center of the visual field. Foveated rendering takes advantage of this by allocating more detailed rendering resources to the foveal region and reducing the level of detail or resolution in the peripheral regions of the visual field that are less focused on by the viewer.

By using eye-tracking technology or other methods to determine where the user is looking, foveated rendering dynamically adjusts the level of detail or resolution in real-time. This allows for significant reductions in the computational workload, as only the foveal region requires rendering at high quality, while the peripheral regions can be rendered at lower quality or even omitted.

The primary goal of foveated rendering is to maximize computational efficiency without compromising the user's visual experience. It helps to overcome the limitations of computational resources and enables more realistic and immersive VR and AR experiences by allocating rendering power where it is most needed, based on the user's gaze.
