Question: How long does it take for styrofoam to decompose?
The styrofoam can take up to 500 years to decompose. The styrofoam begins to lose its shape and gets mushed. There is a process of breaking up into small pieces and then into smaller pieces by some bacteria. The styrofoam then becomes food for other microbes. The decomposition process releases carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. The gases are the main contributors towards global warming. Apart from this, it also releases heavy metals which are toxic.
