Each strand is made of smaller units called nucleotides, which have three parts: a sugar, a phosphate and a nitrogenous base. There are four types of bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C) and guanine (G). The bases on one strand pair with the bases on the other strand in a specific way: A with T and C with G. This pairing is called complementary base pairing and it ensures that the genetic information is copied accurately when DNA replicates.
