Question: Explain at least two environmental impacts of the deforestation of the amazon rainforest.
Loss of biodiversity: The Amazon rainforest is home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species, many of which are endangered or endemic. Deforestation destroys their habitats and exposes them to hunting, poaching, and diseases. Many species may go extinct before they are even discovered by science.
Climate change: The Amazon rainforest absorbs about one-fourth of the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbed by all the land on Earth. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. When the rainforest is burned or cleared, CO2 is released back into the atmosphere, increasing the greenhouse effect and raising the global temperature.
