What would the solar system be affected if the oort cloud did not exist?
Question: What would the solar system be affected if the oort cloud did not exist?
If the Oort Cloud didn't exist, it would likely mean fewer comets entering the inner solar system. The Oort Cloud is believed to be the source of long-period comets, those that take over 200 years to orbit the Sun. Without it, our skies might miss the spectacular comet shows that light up our nights, and astronomers would lose valuable objects to study the early solar system's formation. Additionally, fewer cometary impacts could alter the way water and organic materials were delivered to Earth in its early years. So, less Oort Cloud means fewer cosmic visitors and possibly a very different history for our planet.
